Did you know nearly 40% of people living with HIV/AIDS in Massachusetts are over the age of 50? And that in ten years researchers predict that number to be nearly 60%? We are about to enter an era in which new HIV infections become less common, while caring for HIV positive people during the latter half of their lives becomes a predominant concern.

To talk about the challenges of aging with HIV, approaches to meet these challenges, and programs currently available to support HIV positive people over 50, AIDS Action Committee is inviting community members to an event called “Lasting Strength: Community Forum on HIV and Aging”.

A panel discussion with audience participation, this event will take place Tuesday, September 14 from 6pm-7:30pm at AIDS Action Committee’s main offices, 75 Amory Street, Boston, MA. Click here to download the event flier.

Emerson Miller, AIDS Action Committee’s Peer Services Program Manager, will moderate the discussion. As part of his duties at AIDS Action, Emerson runs the newly established PALS program (Positive Aging, Lasting Strength). PALS is a groundbreaking wellness program for seniors who are infected with, affected by, or at risk for HIV/AIDS. PALS includes a monthly health forum, focusing on a particular topic as it relates to seniors’ health and HIV/AIDS; weekly one-on-one nutritional consults with program participants; group exercise classes and yoga; and smaller support and discussion groups.

To find out more about HIV and aging, check out our HIV Health Library’s resource page, “HIV and Older Persons (Over 50)”. Questions about the September 14th forum or PALS? Contact Emerson Miller at emiller@aac.org or 617.450.1221.

“Lasting Strength: Community Forum on HIV and Aging” is held in observance of National Aging and HIV Awareness Day. Learn more about national HIV/AIDS awareness days at www.aids.gov/awareness-days.
